Veterans' Services Officers (VSO) advocate for and assist veterans, their spouses, dependents, widows or widowers for Veterans' Benefits on the Local, State and Federal levels. Under Chapter 115 of Massachusetts General Laws (MGL Ch. 115) the Commonwealth provides financial, fuel and medical assistance and a host of other services to qualified indigent veterans and their dependents. VSOs also provide referral services for areas regarding homelessness, health, education and employment.
Qualifying veterans and their dependents receive necessary financial assistance for food, shelter, clothing, fuel, and medical care in accordance with a formula which takes into account the number of dependents and income from all sources. Eligible dependents of deceased veterans are provided with the same benefits as if the veteran were still living. The local VSO can also assist in obtaining federal benefits which can include:
