    The City of Northampton Health Department, under the guidance of the Board of Health, assesses and addresses the needs of the community in order to help protect and improve the health and quality of life of residents and visitors. This is carried out by the implementation of disease surveillance, health promotion, environmental health inspection, public outreach, education, and empowerment.

    Duties of the Board of Health include:

    • Act as the licensing authority for all public health permits and licenses in Northampton
    • Adopt, promulgate, amend, and repeal local public health regulations
    • Hear appeals, variances or waivers to state or local public health regulations
    • Provide leadership to the Northampton Health Department
    • Public health advocacy
    • Set fees for public health permits and services
    The Health Department is responsible for permitting and inspecting businesses that provide services to the public to ensure compliance with local, state and federal law. Additional public health concerns and oversight also include, but are not limited to:
    • Restaurants and Retail Food
    • Housing Conditions
    • Swimming Pools and Recreational Camps
    • Tobacco/Nicotine Delivery Retailers
    • Sharps Disposal Program
    • Body Art Establishments and Tanning
