Assists veterans and their dependents with financial help for food, shelter, clothing, fuel, and medical care and referrals for homelessness, health, education and employment.
Veterans' Services Officers (VSO) assist veterans and their families in accessing veterans' benefits and other services. Under Chapter 115 of Massachusetts General Laws (MGL Ch. 115) the Commonwealth provides financial, fuel and medical assistance and a host of other services to qualified indigent veterans and their dependents. Veterans' Services Officers also provide referral services for areas regarding homelessness, health, education and employment.
Qualifying veterans and their dependents receive necessary financial assistance for food, shelter, clothing, fuel, and medical care in accordance with a formula which takes into account the number of dependents and income from all sources. Eligible dependents of deceased veterans are provided with the same benefits as if the veteran were still living. The local VSO can also assist in obtaining federal benefits which can include:
- Filing for compensation and non-service connected pensions
- Obtaining gravestones and markers
- VA Healthcare
- Obtaining military records
